Anticipation: Photographing the Human Heart

Lighting the Shadows of the Human Heart — Photo Walk 01

There is something special about a city united by hope.

During my recent visit to Cleveland, Ohio, the Guardians were competing in the 2026 postseason, and the excitement surrounding Progressive Field created the perfect setting for another photographic exploration.

I wasn’t there to photograph the baseball game. My interest was in the people outside the stadium: the fans, street vendors, conversations, gestures, and expressions of anticipation.

After more than fifty years as a photographer, I continue to challenge myself to see beyond the obvious and capture something meaningful about the human experience.

For this photo walk, I chose one word to guide my vision: Anticipation.

Armed with my camera and a willingness to observe, I explored the streets surrounding the ballpark. Sometimes I walked, sometimes I stopped, and sometimes I simply waited for the right moment to unfold.

One encounter was especially meaningful: a Vietnam veteran sharing a message of peace amid the excitement of baseball. Our conversation reminded me that human stories can be found wherever we take the time to look.

These photographs are part of my ongoing project, Lighting the Shadows of the Human Heart.

I invite you to watch the behind-the-scenes video, explore the photographs, and discover what caught my eye that day.

What does anticipation look like to you?
