The James Van Der Zee Studio: Preserving Black Excellence Through Photography
As a photographer with more than 50 years behind the camera, I’m always inspired by those who used photography to document history, culture, and the human spirit. In this video, I take a closer look at The James Van Der Zee Studio, a remarkable book celebrating one of America’s most influential photographers.
James Van Der Zee’s portraits captured the beauty, dignity, and aspirations of Black families, professionals, artists, and community leaders during the Harlem Renaissance and beyond. His images serve as both fine art and historical records, preserving stories that might otherwise have been forgotten.
Join me as I share my thoughts on this important book, discuss Van Der Zee’s impact on photography, and reflect on how his work continues to inspire my own journey documenting everyday life through street, travel, and documentary photography.
If you enjoy photography, history, visual storytelling, and preserving our collective legacy, this is a book worth exploring.
